A proposal was made to bring the Humboldt Penguins, a native of South America to Byculla Zoo, also known as Jijamata Udyaan / Rani Baug. The initiative was headed by Aditya Thackeray and his younger brother Tejas Thackeray. A natural habitat was created to suit the penguins. Reportedly 45 crores were spent on the infrastructure.
In 2016, the plan was finalized and 8 penguins were brought to Mumbai from South Korea. Days after coming to Mumbai, one penguin died due to bacterial infection.
