Tommy is often asking to do painting, and since Oscar has been around I often avoid it, because Oscar puts everything in his mouth, I feel bad for Tommy as he loves it, so I found a way to paint safely with both kids and feed them afterwards (bonus!).

This session takes a bit of prep, and these photos are from our first attempt, the paint can come out differently so sometimes it’s good to have a play around beforehand.

  1. Pour a very small bit of milk into each pot
  2. Add food colouring to each pot, we used red, yellow and blue and made red, orange, yellow, green, blue & purple for a rainbow.
  3. Mix up the milk and food colouring, at this stage I added more milk or food colouring as I needed it, it is possible to get the mixture quite thick so that It couldn’t be poured everywhere but that meant it would have quite a bit of food colouring in, so I left mine runny.
  4. This step I added in for my own sanity and it did help a little! Cover the high chair or table in cling film, if your child is older you can just use newspaper but I knew Oscar would just play with newspaper and wouldn’t notice the cling film and I was right!
  5. Then they can paint their bread, Oscar loved painting his bread and ate, splashed & explored for ages, then he went straight into the bath!

Other ideas

We let their art work dry out for a little (whilst they bathed) and then toasted it and had it for lunch! They really enjoyed helping “cook” and prepare lunch and the toast was yummy!

Here are some more photos.
